SEPTEMBER 14-17-2017

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          A REUNION REPORT

WE DID IT IN 2005 AND WE JUST DID IT AGAIN IN

SEPTEMBER OF THIS YEAR

A SUMMARY REPORT OF WHAT HAPPENED AT THE CHARLESTON, SC 2017 CREW REUNION

HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR HURRICAINE IRMA, WE WOULD HAVE SET A NEW ATTENDANCE RECORD THIS TIME AROUND.

WE HAD ABOUT 28 CANCELLATIONS DUE TO ILLNESS AND TRAVEL AND OTHER HURRICANE RELATED ISSUES BUT WE STILL HAD A GREAT TURNOUT. WE HAD 149 PEOPLE AT THE SATURDAY BANQUET AND THAT INCLUDED      BANCROFT SAILORS AND GUESTS. NOT BAD FOR A GATHERING THAT ALMOST GOT CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER.

HERE IS WHAT MADE THIS ONE STAND OUT FROM OTHER REUNIONS:

THE FRIDAY EVENING DINNER CRUISE ON CHARLESTON HARBOR

             THE DINNER CRUISE SHIP

  BOARDINGNTHECRUISE SHIP FOR DINNER

WE HAD 101 BANCROFT PEOPLE ON THE DINNER CRUISE AND EVERYONE SAID THE FOOD THEY HAD WAS THE                                        VERY BEST THEY HAVE EVER HAVE HAD AT A VENUE SUCH AS THIS

WAITING TO GO ABOARD THE CRUISE SHIP

WAITING TO BE SERVED WHILE CRUISING THE HARBOR

THE COST OF THE DINNER CRUISE MAY HAVE BEEN MORE THAN SOME WANTED TO SPEND BUT IT WAS WORTH IT AND WE ALL AGREED IT WILL BE HARD TO TOP THIS EVENT

BUT WE WILL TRY NEXT TIME.

WAIT TILL YOU HEAR ABOUT THAT ONE-WHOA!

(THE IDEAS I HAVE HEARD ABOUT WILL BLOW THE PREVIOUS REUNIONS AWAY)

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

LIKE AT ALL OUR REUNIONS, WE HAD AUCTIONS AND 50/50 RAFFLES AND SOME WON PRIZES AND SOME DID NOT. HERE'S WHAT SOME FOLKS WENT HOME WITH:

ONE OF THE WINE MAGNUMS, SIGNED BY MOST OFTHE ATTENDEES, WAS WON BY TERRY SPARKS. TERRY TOLD ME THE WINE WAS GONE BEFORE THE REUNION WAS OVER BUT HE TOOK THE BOTTLE HOME AS A MOMENTO. (THAT'S WHY WE GET EVERYBODY TO SIGN THOSE BIG BOTTLES)

BY THE WAY, THE WINE WAS MADE BY OUR VERY OWN STONY PEARCY,, A NAVIGATION TYPE ET FROM THE BLUE COMMISSIONING CREW DAYS

BILL BADALUCCA, OUR SECRETARY, PRESENTED ONE OF THE WINE MAGNUMS TO OUR GUEST SPEAKER, BILL

OSTENDORFF, WHO WAS A BANCROFT JR. OFFICER BACK IN THE LATE SEVENTIES ON THE GOLD CREW AND

WENT ON TO A LONG CAREER ON BOATS AND AS A COMMISSIONER ON THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY

COMMISSION UP UNTIL 2016

THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN BY ADMIRAL RICKOVER AND WAS WON BY RON ZENTEK, AN FTB FROM THE GOLD CREW IN THE LATE        SIXTIES AND EARLY SEVENTIES

THIS PIECE OF THE BANCROFT'S HULL WAS CUT FROM THE MISSILE COMPARTMENT AFTER SHE WAS DECOMMISSIONED IN 1993, AND DONATED TO THE ASSOCIATION IN 2005 BY JOHN BENDER WHO WORKED AT THE YARD IN BREMERTON, WASHINGTON WHERE THE BOAT WAS CUT UP AND SCRAPPED

LATER IT WAS MADE INTO THE DISPLAY YOU SEE BELOW

THE SPIRIT OF THE 643 GETS AUCTIONED OFF AT EVERY REUNION AND THIS YEAR IT WAS WON BY OUR SECRETARY BILL BADALUCCA

IN 2019 AT THE CLEVELAND REUNION, IT WILL BE AUCTIONED OFF AGAIN.

ANOTHER AUCTION ITEM WAS THIS "WOODEN WATCH" WHICH WAS WON BY KIETH SMITH, A GOLD CREW ELECTRICIANS MATE FROM THE COMMISSIONING CREW DAYS

THE CASE IS ALL WOOD BUT IT WORKS

THIS MODELOF THE 643 WAS DONATED BY AL POWEL, AN FTB FROM THE GOLD COMMISSIONING CREW

IT WAS AUCTIONED OFF AND WON BY JOHN PROCHNIAK. JOHN WAS A LAUCHER TYPE TORPEDOMAN FROM THE EARLY 70'S

LOUIS LANGFORD WON THE 50/50 RAFFLE AND TURNED RIGHT AROUND AND DONATED THE MONEY ($313) BACK TO THE ASSOCIATION

ACTIONS LIKE THAT AND THE AUCTIONS SHOWN ABOVE ALONG WITH SHIPSTORE SALES DURING THE REUNION WEEKEND ARE THE REASON OUR ASSOCIATION REMAINS DUES FREE AND AND WE CAN DO OTHER THINGS SUCH AS THE PARK BENCH BELOW

AND DONATE A $1000 SCHOLARSHIP TO A JR NAVY ROTC STUDENT IN NORTH PORT, FLORIDA ( THAT WAS THE GROUP OF CADETS THAT CAME TO KINGS BAY TO PAINT THE SAIL MEMORIAL IN JULY OF 2016 )

BECAUSE OF ALL THE DEDICATED SUPPORT FROM ALL OF YOU FORMER BANCROFT SAILORS, OUR GROUP STANDS UNIQUE AMONG THE GROUPS OUT THERE FROM ALL THE BOATS THAT CARRY ON ACTIVITIES ON A YEAR ROUND BASIS SUCH AS WE DO. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT OUR ASSOCIATION DOES MORE THAN THE AVERAGE MEMORIAL GROUP FROM INDIVIDUAL BOATS AND WE INTEND TO KEEP IT THAT WAY.

AT THE BUSINESS MEETING DURING THIS REUNION THE SCHOLARSHIP MENTIONED HERE WAS APPROVED AS AN ON-GOING YEARLY AWARD SO IT WILL BE AWARDED AGAIN REAL SOON.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

ANOTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION AT EACH REUNION IS THE ELECTION OF OFFICERS. WE USUALLY ELECT A NEW VICE CMDR AND THE SITTING VICE CMDR STEPS UP TO BECOME THE NEW COMMANDER. HOWEVER THIS REUNION WAS A BIT DIFFERENT BECAUSE OUR VICE COMMANDER, TIM PERRY, HAD TO STEP DOWN SEVERAL MONTHS EARLY FOR PERSONAL REASONS. THAT LEFT A VACANCY FOR BOTH POSITIONS, BUT MIKE FLAMMIA AGREED TO STEP UP TOTHE PLATE AS AN INTERIM COMMANDER FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS AND A NEW VICE CMDR, RALPH BUCKNER, WAS ELECTED.

MIKE WAS AN ASSOCIATION COMMANDER A FEW YEARS AGO AND KNOWS WHAT GOES ON.

COMMANDER,  MIKE FLAMMIA                                                                                                             NEW VICE COMMANDER  RALPH BUCKNER

RALPH WAS A BLUE CREW FTB1 FROM THE MID AND LATE EIGHTIES. HE WAS NOMINATED AND ELECTED AT THE BUSINESS MEETING DURING THE REUNION. AT THE NEXT REUNION IN CLEVELAND HE WILL STEP UP TO RELIEVE MIKE AS COMMANDER

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

WE ALSO HAD A TOUR OF THE HUNLEY DISPLAY ON FRIDAY MORNING.

OVER 70 BANCROFT PEOPLE WENT ON THE TOUR AND ALL SAID IT WAS GREAT. SOME FOLKS HAD SEEN IT MANY YEARS AGO WHEN THAT PROJECT JUST BEGAN AND THEY REMARKED HOW FAR THE RESTORATION HAS COME.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Many thanks go out to all the folks who sent in photos for use on this reunion report:

KIETH SMITH   JOE MCLAUGHLIN   ALICE HOLMES   NATALE LEO

AL POWELL   TIM SHUGART   DAVE GUILER   LLOYD HENDRICKS
